Youth Lecture - 10/12/10: The Importance of Time

On Friday night, the topic of our lecture was about time and how it could be utilised efficiently. Is time something to waste? Or is it something that should be used to the maximum?

We should all use time usefully, because we might not know when we will die. We shouldn't be like those who say that they will start praying when they are a bit older, because who knows, the Angel of Death might be behind your back right now.

These days, many youths waste their time on unnecessary things like games, going out, watching movies and so on. It is not until later in life that they ponder upon, realise & regret the precious time that they have wasted.

Time is one of those things that once it passes, it can never return again.

Allah explains the importance of time in Surah al-`Asr.

(1) By the time, (2) Verily, Man is in loss, (3) Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.

In this Surah, Allah swears by one of the most precious things we have, i.e. time. He says that mankind is in loss, except for those among mankind who believe, do righteous deeds, advise each other to the truth & patience.

Imam Ash-Shafi`i said: "If Allah had revealed only this Surah to His creatures, it alone would have sufficed them with their guidance."

This explains the importance of time & how to use it to our advantage.

Of course, there are times when we relax and have fun. Islam permits this. However, Islam steps in when this fun and relaxation occupies & distracts us from our duties to Allah.

And Allah Knows Best
